The End of the Fourth Estate?

In a recent Wall Street Journal story, it was reported that state of New Hampshire guaranteed a $200k loan to a local newspaper. While this is not the same as government funded and controlled media in places like Russia, China, and Cuba, it is not a stretch to imagine what such subsidies could do to the editorial independence of the local media. How does an editor select what to publish, say a report on corrupt local politicians, when he knows his paycheck comes from that same source?
